When we take a adjectivce such as English or Hungarian, we must add -ul/ül to turn the adjective into the adverb to be used as the language name in such constructions as beszél angolul? do you speak English?

Please see the Hungarian adverbs page.

Note how the adverb is not capitalised, and that it literally means "do you speak Englishly?"

  • beszélsz angolul? do you speak English?
  • sajnos, csak kicsit beszélek magyarul. sorry, I only speak a little Hungarian.
  • angol vagyok. I am English.
  • magyar vagy? are you Hungarian?
  • nem beszélek magyarul. I don't speak Hungarian.
  • Ő amerikai. he is American.

  • Németországból vagy? are you from Germany? (lit. are you out of Germany)
  • Budapestről vagyok I am from Budapest (lit. I am off-of Budapest)
